Places 2 Check Out: The Brewer's Cabinet

Perched on the corner of California and Arlington is an oddly shaped building that's now anchored by a hopping new restaurant and brewery. And at The Brewer's Cabinet, it's tough to tell which is the bigger draw: the food or the brew. Chris Kahl is the owner. "We try and use a lot of local ingredients in our food ...and just different ingredients in general with the beer."

Let's start upstairs in the brewery where brewmaster Justin Sibley is making a spiced Christmas ale. He adds star anise, coriander, cardamom and ginger into the barrels. Justin makes up his own recipes for the beer and often times adds signature ingredients. "We've had some wit beers in the past where we've done blood oranges and pluots which we got from the local co-op here. Right now we have a basil and peppercorn saison that's going to be tapped tonight."

They make about 600 gallons of beer a month. The problem? People like it so much they're drinking more than 600 gallons a month. So the favorites do run out from time-to-time. 

From the basement kitchen, up comes some amazing food. And the most popular thing on the menu? The BC burger. The pretzel bun encompasses the meat topped with applewood bacon, a gigantic onion ring, chive infused cheddar cheese and roasted garlic mayo. Soups and salads are also available and things get kicked up a notch at night. "We've got different food on our dinner menu than our lunch menu. We've got braised short ribs, buffalo meatloaf."

When the weather is nice, a new garage door makes access to the patio a snap. This outdoor area nearly doubles the restaurant's capacity. And expansions are in the near future. The first? A new beer garden. The plan is to pull out some old bushes and replace them with a garden of fruits, vegetables and hops. The second is a new tasting room upstairs that will have a balcony overlooking the beer garden. Both fun ideas to look forward to at The Brewer's Cabinet.

    The Reno Bighorns (21-17) fell to the Memphis Hustle (16-25) 112-110 Saturday afternoon at the Landers Center in Southaven, Miss. Jack Cooley led the Bighorns recording his fifteenth double-double of the season with  28 points and 15 rebounds while Jakarr Sampson had 28 points and six rebounds.
