12-12-12 a Boon for Business

Posted: Updated:

The 12th day of the 12th month of the 12th year in this century was a busy one for the wedding chapels in Reno. The day began briskly with three times the business at the Washoe County Marriage License Bureau than a normal Wednesday sees.

"We've had people coming in all day. In fact, we had 15 licenses issued by 11:00 this morning and 15 is usually a full day for us," said Janet Parent who is the Chief Deputy County Clerk for Washoe.

And that translated into keeping the wedding chapels in town busy too.

"The 12-12-12 has a good sound," said Kyakk Hteyt who traveled here from Daly City, California to get married. "There won't be another date with the ta-ting…ta-ting…ta-ting to it. This is a special day."

"A lot of folks feel it's special when the numbers line up and they say it's a date they can remember," Parent added.

Sally Saban and her fiancé came here from Ottawa, Canada just to tie the knot.

"I was born on April 12, and 12 is my favorite number so today is a very good day, right?" she said.

"I just want to get married before the world ends on 12-21," said Bill Birdsong from Seattle.

Chapels had weddings scheduled every half hour today and the hospitals were busy too.

Renown reported 5 babies born, Saint Mary's had 4 and Carson Tahoe had just one as of 4:00pm. But that little one at Carson Tahoe was born at 12:15am.
