10 Black Bears Killed as Nevada Hunt Winds Down

Posted: Updated:

Ten black bears have been killed in Nevada so far in the second season of the state's black bear hunt.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife tells the Associated Press only one female bear was killed, and most were taken in the Pine Nut or Sweetwater mountains of western Nevada.

Six of 10 hunters used dogs to help track the bruins. Opponents of Nevada's bear hunt are pressing for a regulation to ban using dogs to hunt bears.

The season runs through Dec. 31 but will end sooner if 20 bears are killed.

Department of Wildlife spokesman Chris Healy says only one bear, a 400-pound male, had an ear tag, meaning it was handled previously by biologists. But Healy says that bear was not a nuisance bear, but rather was part of a study. (AP)
