Big Decision Could Mean Big Bucks For Northern Nevada
Washoe County received some great news Tuesday.
The Western Nevada Development District voted unanimously to include Washoe County in its nine county region. This inclusion of Washoe County means more opportunities to access federal grant money and it shows cooperation between the counties and cities.
Reno's Vice Mayor Sharon Zadra said that kind of unity hasn't always been there.
"Finally, we're beginning to recognize we are one region, one destination and not just for economic development, but the entire package. We really do need to begin thinking and acting that way. This is primarily the first start."
The WNDD Board of Directors is appointed by county commissions and city councils. WNDD is one of 520 multi-jurisdictional organizations in the U.S. ,and the only one of its type in Nevada. So, we're talking a huge organization with lots of pull.
Sparks Mayor Geno Martini said their decision to include Washoe County in their super nine counties comes at the perfect time. A time, as we all know, when competition for federal funds is extremely high, due to a rough economic climate.
City and county officials said this decision will improve their ability to secure funding for projects that need to get done.
Washoe County Commissioner Bob Larkin said two projects came to mind right away at Tuesday's press conference.
"That is to finish that USA Parkway over to Lyon County and get that airport over in Silver Springs operational and tie the whole region together. That I'm excited about."
