If you still have mailing to do you are not alone. In fact, chances are that you'll be running into a crowd anytime you hit the post office from now until Christmas.
The United States Post Office estimates 18 billion pieces of mail and 365 million packages will be processed nationwide this month. Here in northern Nevada a million pieces of mail will be processed every night from now until Christmas.
But there are a few things you can do to help the process go smoothly. For starters get things packed well, don't wrap boxes in paper but label the boxes directly and get the address right.
"If you don't know the zip code, don't guess," says Jerry DePaoli of the USPS in Reno. "You can go on USPS.com and put in any address and it will give you the zip-plus-four."
Also, you can use automated machines in the lobbies of most post offices to weigh and stamp things yourself. And you can avoid the lines altogether too.
"You can go to USPS.com for that," says DePaoli. "You can get boxes online 24-hours a day, you can get labels and pay the postage and then have your carrier pick it up at hour home. You don't have to come in here at all if you don't want to."
You can also take advantage of flat fees for anything that will fit in specifically-sized postal boxes, up to 70-pounds.
