Reno Says Work To Come For Historic Train Depot

Posted: Updated:

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- A month after Reno's 1926 train depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places, the city is on track to renovate the building into a heritage center.

City strategic development chief Maureen McKissick tells the Reno Gazette-Journal (http://on.rgj.com/12dr0w2 ) it'll probably take a couple of years.

Reno acquired the historical portion of the depot at the corner of Center Street and Commercial Row about five years ago.

It's now named the Southern Pacific-Amtrak Railroad Depot.

The eastern wing got work last month. More work will come while the Reno Transportation Rail Access Corridor project moves train tracks 33 feet underground through downtown Reno.

City historical preservation specialist Mella Harmon says National Register designation makes the building eligible for grants like the National Parks Service's National Historic Preservation Program.
