BLM Restrictions on Burned Areas in Douglas County

Posted: Updated:

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Two areas in Douglas County are off-limits to wood gathering and tree cutting for the next two years because of wildfires this summer that left terrain unstable and prone to erosion.

The Bureau of Land Management issued temporary restrictions earlier this week for the burn areas in the Pine Nut Mountains. The order also limits vehicles to posted roads and two-track trails.

Restrictions will remain in effect until Dec. 4, 2014.

The Topaz Ranch Estates fire in May destroyed two homes, 17 outbuildings and burned 7,500 acres. It was started by a smoldering, backyard burn pile.

Lightning strikes in June sparked the Preacher fire, which burned about 1,000 acres.

BLM officials say rehabilitation work is planned to generate regrowth of annual and perennial vegetation.
