Places 2 Check Out: Paulie's Pizza

Posted: Updated:

On the West Coast, it's not often you see a square pizza. But at Paulie's Pizza in Franktown Corners, they're introducing all of us to real Western New York pizza. "A lot of my ingredients are shipped in from Buffalo, New York. My mother still lives there so we all call her the east coast distributor over there."

When Paulie Archie and his wife, Jennifer, moved to Reno 8 years ago, they had no experience in the restaurant business. But what they did know is Reno didn't offer the same type of pizza they grew up with in Buffalo. So two months ago, they opened Paulie's. And while pizza is king here, Paulie is also king of chicken wings. "I was four-time chicken wing champ of Buffalo, New York. I've eaten a lot of wings in my time. So if anyone knows what buffalo wings are, I do."

They even have a mamma mia wing option that's so hot you have to sign a waiver to order them.

Fortunately, they have other options! They also have sandwiches like the chicken parmesan. And then there's the famous one they call "beef on a weck." "I didn't know there are that many transients out here from Western New York until I started putting the beef on weck on the window and people come in almost every day asking for it and I tell them on Wednesdays."

While Paulie has the pizza, Jen has the bar. And she's offering some unique options on this side of the restaurant as well. "I also do Jell-O shots all the time. Which a lot of bars don't do. $1.50 Jell-O shots all day long.

So for an authentic taste of Western New York, just head to Franktown Corners in Reno.
