Tow Truck Business Grows as Economy Sours

Posted: Updated:

Tough economic times translate into business for towing companies across Northern Nevada. A year ago D & S Tow, Inc. in Sparks had eight drivers and was making about 100 pick-ups a week. This year the weekly pick up is 140 pick-ups.

"It's not quite double," says D & S Tow, Inc. owner Susan Zinser, "but it is definitely up."

She says folks are keeping cars longer and fixing them instead of buying new ones. And she says they tow to salvage yards, which is strong business right now.

It was the answer for Sam Zuick, who has two young children and had no money for Christmas.

"Our car just stopped. We couldn't get it running and we decided to call Pick and Pull and they even picked it up and paid the towing. We probably only wouldn't have gotten more than $50 bucks for it as a car, but they gave us $192 in cash! It was great and that will finance Christmas for us."

The salvage yards in town also report strong business but wouldn't talk to us on camera. And one note, you do have to have clear title on the vehicle to take advantage of the program.
