Immunize Nevada Fights Germs at Discovery Museum Saturday
As part of Immunize Nevada's mission to educate families about ways to stay healthy during National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) and National Hand Washing week occurring this week, they are offering a hand washing demonstration and exhibit at the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum (The Discovery), located at 490 South Center St. in Reno, on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The demonstration is simple. Kids put on a special lotion, wash their hands as they normally would, then place their hands under a light to see what germs remained despite washing. Immunize Nevada will also be interacting with families to educate them about the flu and their vaccination options.
"The exhibit is meant to educate children and their families about the importance of frequent and appropriate hand washing," said Heidi Parker, executive director of Immunize Nevada. "During flu season, we want to make sure that people are doing everything they can to protect themselves and their loved ones from the flu virus, so in addition to the hand washing demonstration, we will be on site to answer questions about where and how to get a flu vaccine."
This season, health experts across the country are recommending that everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine. NIVW provides an opportunity for public health professionals, healthcare professionals, health advocates, communities and families from across the country to work together to give the flu vaccination before the traditional winter peak in flu activity.
