Dynamite Found in Home in Carson City

Posted: Updated:

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says a man reported he had hidden dynamite in the home he owned decades ago.

Sheriff's deputies got to the house on Bath Street at about 4 p.m. Tuesday after the man reported the dynamite at the sheriff's department and told Sheriff Furlong that he had stored dynamite in the house when he lived there.

"He described to us that he would store the dynamite in the walls of the house," Furlong says. "We determined it was located in the garage. He would remove the wall and retrieved a few sticks and put the wall back."

Explosives experts started x-raying the walls to see where the dynamite was. By evening they had found three or four sticks of dynamite.

"The danger is dynamite becomes unstable as it gets older because of the nitroglycerine so having it in the walls if you were to sink a screw or a nail in the wall it could set it off," says Jim Antti, Commander of the Tahoe-Douglas Bomb Squad.

Sara Hopkins and her family live next-door to the house. She says deputies asked them to leave.

"It was a little upsetting because if we had had an earthquake it would have shifted," Hopkins said. "If it had crystallized, he said it could have gone off and been really unstable. So it's a little nerve-racking. We're hoping since it hasn't gone off in 50 years and there have been crazy winds, that it'll be fine."
