Business as Usual for Most of Industrial Sparks Area

Posted: Updated:

Businesses located in the Sparks industrial park were pleasantly surprised to get right down to business this morning without having to mop-up.

"We laid in a lot of sandbags thinking this would be a really bad storm and we'd have all kind of damage from it," said Brad Riley with Nevada Transit and Laser, a surveying company in Sparks. "And turns out, it wasn't that bad. We were prepared to be mopping-up and drying out today, and look, it's dry."

Riley says he laid-in two layers of sandbags around his garage doors for loading just to keep water out. And the owners of the building he rents came by with truckloads and sandbagged the front doors. And in the end there was no flood.

"But it was great that the Fire Department came by with information and maps on where to get sandbags and everyone really worked together bracing for the worst. I'm glad we didn't need them. And I'm glad we were ready," Riley said.

Not far away, Jeff Smith with Restorx of Nevada was ready with layers of sandbags as well.

"We used to be located on Edison and we were flooded out three times over there. So we were ready," Smith said.

His workshop is on shelving set up for as much as three feet of water to flow through without harming any equipment, ironically used to steam clean and dry up damage from flooding.

"It's kind of a bittersweet thing," Smith said. "I mean flooding damage is our business…but we didn't want to be flooded ourselves."

And both plan to hang onto the sandbags they've already got, just in case.
