Places 2 Checkout: Babe Matteri's

Babe Matteri was a pro baseball player. He even got his nickname from Babe Ruth. But maybe just as important, was the relationship he had with his grandson. "Babe Matteri was Joseph Matteri on my mother's side and my grandfather was probably the most important male figure in my life." 

For Carlos Vasquez, and his wife Terri, that influence meant Carlos could do anything he wanted in life. And opening a restaurant in honor of his grandfather was one of them. "The concept here is great Italian food at night, some place where you can bring your family, bring your kids, and the Saturday and Sunday we're open for all 3 meals. So I wanted something that would convert easily to a more traditional breakfast and lunch and then convert back to a higher end Italian restaurant at night."

Town Square, in the heart of Somersett, is where Carlos chose to open up shop. And while he believes this location is ideal - in fact, he lives right down the street - he also believes he's brought together the perfect team to make it. Like Chef Massimo Riggio. The Eldorado brought him over from La Scala, a famous restaurant in Milan, to work at La Strada. Massimo also spent 10 years at Ramanza inside the Peppermill. And now, he's bringing his authentic creations to Babe Matteri's. 

"We have a stuffed polenta with Italian sausage, roasted red peppers and mozzarella served in a bath of roasted tomato and those tomatoes are totally imported from Italy. They are really good, the are sweet," Chef Massimo showed us.

They have spaghetti and gigantic meatballs, chicken marsala and for those with a lighter appetite, a little taste of Italy on a cutting board. "And then we have a beautiful antipasto misto. We have all kinds of meats and cheeses. So you can come by if you like and come into the bar and have a nice bottle of wine and a little bit of Italy."

And soon, a gambling room off to the side will offer guests up to 15 machines as well. It's a unique concept that may soon spread to other markets in Northern Nevada.
