The Steam Boat fire broke out just before 1:30 p.m. Thursday, just south of Mayberry Park.

By the time it was contained at 7 p.m. it had burned more than 100 acres.

Fortunately, no homes were damaged. Earlier in the day, crews were watching the Aspen Glen area closely, setting up a line to protect the homes.

"It started to threaten the Caughlin Ranch area, the Juniper Ridge and the Aspen Glen area. This is being pushed by ferocious winds again," Chief Charles Moore of the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District told us Thursday afternoon.

In the afternoon, our crew north of the fire said strong winds were non-stop. The good news is by 5:30 p.m. the winds were helping firefighters because they were blowing east away from neighborhoods.

As of 5 p.m., nine engines were on the scene of the fire with three on standby just in case the wind pushes the flames closer to homes.

There are no mandatory evacuations but as you can imagine, homeowners in the area told us they were nervous when they learned about the fire.

"I've been watering the grass, I've been watering the bushes and the house and hope that everything is okay," Ginette Bending told us. The fire burned right behind her house and Tom DeBruin's. "Got a call from work today from my neighbor over here and said that there was a fire burning behind the house and it was burning through the canyon behind the house," DeBruin told us Thursday afternoon.

Fourth Street between McCarran and Verdi is being used as the access point for fire crews, so you're asked to avoid driving on Fourth Street.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

We'll continue to bring you the latest information as we get it into our newsroom.
