Bighorns Announce Program to Help NV Colon Cancer Partnership

Posted: Updated:

RENO, NEV., November 29, 2012 — The Reno Bighorns have partnered with G.I. Consultants to bring fans the "Dime a Dunk" program, the team announced today.

For every slam dunk the Bighorns make at home games, fans can pledge to donate $.10 to the Nevada Colon Cancer Partnership. G.I. Consultants is also the official sponsor of all slam dunks.

The Nevada Colon Cancer Partnership aims to prevent colon cancer through promoting the benefits of getting screened. Having a colon cancer screening can reduce the risk of dying from colon cancer by 60-70%.  Leading a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of ever getting colon cancer.

"Colon cancer prevention is near and dear to my heart," said Bighorns owner, Herb Santos, Jr. "In 2007, I lost my mom to complications from colon cancer.  A simple colon screening would have identified the cancer early and with treatment, she would be with us today.  I cannot emphasize the importance of early screening.  This program will help bring awareness and help fund programs which provide education on the screening process."

Fans can make their pledges by downloading the pledge form from the Bighorns website and mailing it in, or can get a pledge card at any Bighorns home game or any G.I. Consultants office location.

The Bighorns will be keeping track of all dunks on the "Slam Dunk Colon Cancer" webpage at http://www.nba.com/dleague/reno/slamdunkcoloncancer. Last season, the Bighorns averaged 5 slam dunks per game. Fans that pledge will be updated every six games on the number of dunks and amount of money raised.

The Bighorns will also host their second annual "Slam Dunk Colon Cancer Night" presented by G.I. Consultants on Saturday, March 9, 2013.

For more information, fans can visit the "Slam Dunk Colon Cancer" webpage or call the Bighorns office at 775-284-2622.

The Bighorns open their fifth season in Reno on Friday, November 30th at 7 p.m. against the Santa Cruz Warriors. Opening Weekend continues on Sunday, December 2nd at 3 p.m. Season tickets and group tickets are on sale today. For more information, fans can call 775-853-8220.
