The Owyhee complex is located about 60 miles north of Midas in Elko and Humboldt counties. This complex is made up of five different herd management areas.
"These five HMA's are being managed as a complex due to their geographical location with the known movement of wild horses between and within HMA's," said Gene Seidlitz, District Manager, Winnemucca BLM. "This gather, of some of the HMAs, is the first step in a phased-in management strategy to eventually reach low (Appropriate Management Levels)."
The initial gather will remove 986 wild horses. The female horses will be given a fertility control vaccine. Some of the horses will be taken to three of the BLM's wild horse centers and others will be released back onto the range.
An information hotline has been set up to give daily updates on the gather. That number in (775) 861-6700. You can also get daily updates at http://bit.ly/Owyhee
