Thanksgiving Travelers Head Home

Posted: Updated:

Airports around the country were slammed on Wednesday with travelers on their way to see family and friends.

For most of them, the vacation came to an end Sunday. Traveling during the holidays is tough, and things don't always run smoothly.

"Columbus was packed this morning," says Barbara Price. "We had to get up at 3 a.m. to get to the airport from Newark. And, long lines, but we got out on time."

At Reno-Tahoe International Airport, employees are working overtime to make sure there are no hiccups during the week.

"We really work together closely with the airlines and with the Transportation Security Administration and also with our food and beverage retail," says Heidi Jared, spokesperson for the airport.

Some nasty weather can turn a family trip into a nightmare pretty quickly, but thankfully, we had some beautiful weather around most of the country.

"Today, there was just one delay so far with the San Francisco bay area," says Jared.

Folks flying back to Reno say with any flight, whether it's over the holidays or not, you just have to pack your patience.

"When you get on the plane and you have all these kids in various humors," says Charles Price. "It becomes interesting."

Being on a plane with a screaming child isn't a whole lot of fun, but some kids are a breeze to travel with.

"He doesn't say a word usually and takes it easy on us because he knows we're kind of lightweights, so he wants to make sure we're ok," says Stephen Eisenmann, talking about his 1-year-old son.

The Eisenmann family travels a lot. So, they know what to expect at airports this time of year.

"We have all of our liquids and gels in a bag already before we get there," says Kathleen Eisenmann. "I'm a planner so we're always ready ahead of time."

The airports will be slammed again in a few weeks for Christmas. So, if you're traveling next month, take a deep breath and be prepared for just about anything.

"You mentally gear up for it," says Barbara Price. "You have a good book."
