Buying Local is a Big Deal

Posted: Updated:

Small businesses are collectively pushing the idea that buying local is the best way to create jobs, and keep money here locally.

"It's all about creating opportunity here," says Troy Schneider of Junkee Clothing Exchange. His company has hosted a Local Black Friday Bus Tour for eight years now and they have one set for this Friday. "We give shoppers wine and champagne, load them on a bus and take them to local out-of-the-way places they may never have been in before. We feed them lunch, take care of their purchases and they have a great time."

Schneider says it's kind of a wash financially at $48.50 a person, but it sparks interest in local businesses and people come back to shop.

The Garden Shop on McCarran and Mayberry is one of the shops on two of the Black Friday Bus Tours. Ed Bath says, that kind of exposure is great.

"It's important for my business, but it's also important because we employ more than a dozen people here and we can offer unique artistic gifts you don't find in the box stores," he says. "Even our Christmas Trees support local businesses in Oregon. We get the trees from a local dealer there, that helps them. And they were just cut last week so we know they are fresh."

"We have unique items," says Eric Baron of the Melting Pot, another local business on the tours. "And we love having tours like this bring us a wave of shoppers all at once. And we have a lot of deals going for Friday, Saturday and Sunday in honor of that."

Even if you are shopping for common things like lights and snow shovels, you can shop local.

"People don't always thing of us first, but we have Black Friday deals and we have everything you can think of at competitive prices," says Tim Carter of Ace Hardware in Reno. "And we can walk you through projects, and with the American Express program for Small Business Saturday, customers make money."

Small Business Saturday is a national program where American Express gives customers a $25 credit for spending $25 on their card on Small Business Friday. On Monday Governor Brian Sandoval issued a proclamation adding Nevada to the list of those who should support small businesses this coming weekend.

For more information on the program go to www.AmericanExpress.com/us/small-business.

The Shop Local Bus Tours have been spread out form now through Christmas to give everyone time to get on board.
