The U.S. Forest Service plans to mow and mulch brush and small trees behind the Galena Creek Visitor Center in an effort to remove potential fire fuels.

The effort will target 73 acres off the Mount Rose Highway to reduce fuels near suburban homes.

Officials say the project will ease the risk of catastrophic wildfire and give firefighters a better chance of stopping a large fire if one breaks out.

The Forest Service says signs will be placed on trails advising people to avoid the popular hiking area while the project is under way.  (AP)
