Abandoned Campfire Blamed for Overnight Fire in Verdi

Posted: Updated:

The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) quickly contained a small brush fire that broke out shortly before 4 a.m. this morning in Verdi. Fire Investigators for TMFPD have identified the source of the fire as an abandoned campfire.

Fire crews remained on site throughout the day to complete mop up and ensure public safety. The brush fire broke out at Dog Valley Road and Hill Lane in Verdi, burned approximately 2-acres and came within 100 yards of a structure. No structures were burned. TMFPD had 5 brush trucks and 2 water tenders on the scene and had the fire contained within an hour. The District also received help from the NV Division of Forestry.

TMFPD Division Chief Tim Leighton wants to remind everyone that even with recent precipitation, fire danger still exists, "Because the vegetation in our wildland-urban interface area is still dry, there continues to be a possibility of experiencing catastrophic fires in the region. For example, this fire area received an inch of rain just days ago. Please continue to use extreme caution, especially during a wind event."
