Meadowood Mall Interchange to Open on Thanksgiving Day
RENO, Nev. (Nov. 15, 2012) – I-580 will open to the public on Thanksgiving Day.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) and Meadow Valley Contractors, Inc. and their sub-contractors have been working around the clock during the past several weeks to safely complete and open the new Meadowood Mall Interchange by the holiday. This project represents a $22 million investment for the region.
"We greatly appreciate the patience of area businesses and the public during construction. I urge everyone to exercise caution when driving around the project area this weekend and into next week as our construction crew continue their work toward opening day," said Adam Searcy, NDOT Project Manager.
Finishing touches on the aesthetic elements of the project are slated to be done over the coming months. The main priority at this time is to open this new gateway to area shopping and businesses in time for the holiday season.
This regional project reconfigured the existing I-580 interchange at Neil Road to a split diamond which will improve the flow of traffic in a critical commercial area in southwest Reno. Improvements include constructing a new bridge structure and extending Meadowood Mall Way under the freeway, widening existing bridge structures at South Virginia and South McCarran; eliminating the southbound off-ramp and northbound on-ramp at Neil Road and construction of a new southbound off-ramp and northbound on-ramp at Meadowood Mall Way with frontage roads for the freeway ramps at Neil Road.
When completed, the new interchange will provide additional freeway access; reduce traffic volumes at the South Virginia freeway ramps and at the intersection of South McCarran and South Virginia. It will improve safety and traffic circulation at several key intersections in the project area, including South McCarran/South Virginia; Kietzke/South McCarran; South Virginia/Meadowood Mall Way and I-580 Ramps at Neil Road. This project was funded by The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.
