Just a half block off South Virginia Street on Saint Lawrence, is another hot spot in Midtown. Wedge Cheese Shop is just that. A shop to pick up some unique cheeses and everything that goes with it. Peter Burge is the co-owner. "I'm just a cheese lover, aficionado. And felt that I wanted a store in Reno that I wanted to shop at."
Peter, and his business partner Laura Conrow, both love cheese. So much so, they even went to a cheese school in San Francisco. They didn't know each other and it took their professors to make the connection. "When I was down there and told them what I wanted to do in Reno they said 'ya know, there's somebody in Reno you need to talk to.'"
And a year later, Peter and Laura opened up Wedge. They have about 100 different types of cheese. A third come from the west coast, like Northern California, Oregon, Washington and even Nevada. "So this is queso fresco from Sand Hill. This is the only cheese being made in Nevada. It's a farm stead cheese," says Laura.
Another third of their cheeses come from the rest of the U.S. like Wisconsin, Vermont and New York. And the last third come from foreign cheese makers.
And to go with the cheese, Wedge has beer and wine, crackers and some gourmet spreads and jams. They even offer classes to help you figure out what to buy. "We do a number of classes. One of them is cheese basics where we talk about the different categories of cheese. And we teach people how to navigate a cheese shop."
And once you know what you want, Peter and Laura will slice you off a wedge, big or small. Or they'll make you a platter to enjoy in the shop with a glass of wine. Or wrap it up and put it into a gift basket to take on your way to a friend's house. So while yes, Wedge is a cheese shop, it offers so much more.
And they are having their official grand opening tomorrow, Friday, November 16th from 1 to 7pm. For more information go online to www.wedgecheeseshop.com or call 775-737-4078.
