NY Prosecutors Press Ahead on Etan Patz Case

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- A man who police say volunteered a confession in the decades-old disappearance of a 6-year-old New York City boy is to appear in court on murder and kidnapping charges.

Pedro Hernandez's long-delayed indictment in the Etan Patz case faces several obstacles: the case dates to 1979, the body's never been found and the motive is murky. Hernandez's lawyer also contends his client is delusional.

Prosecutors, who announced the charges on Wednesday, say that an exhaustive post-arrest investigation found enough evidence to seek an indictment and proceed to trial. Hernandez is to be in court on Thursday.

Etan's disappearance spawned a movement to publicize cases of missing children. His photo was among the first put on milk cartons, and his case turned May 25 into National Missing Children's Day.
