New Nursing Home Ratings For Nevada

Posted: Updated:

You can get the lowdown on a nursing home even before going inside…the new ratings from Medicare came out this week. The ratings are based on federal and state inspections, with rankings from 1 star: "much below average," to 5 stars: "much above average." We looked at the locals, and found 8 were above average, 4 below. The very best are these 3 "5-star" facilities:

-Carson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Highway 50, Carson City

-Tahoe Forest Hospital, Truckee

-Rosewood Rehabilitation Center, Silverada Boulevard, Reno

Rosewood's executive director, Randy Marsh, says one of the secrets to being top-rated in Reno is a general attitude. As he put it to us, "We want to treat everyone how we like to be treated ourselves. That's it, I mean it's simple. It's just the golden rule."

But there's also information even a 5-star nursing home may not want publicized. Inspectors say a Rosewood resident received an injection in the abdomen in front of other residents, and report Rosewood failed to serve food in a safe and clean way. Marsh told us "You know, there are areas where we can improve." Inspectors also reported that Rosewood failed to have a program that investigates, controls and keeps infection from spreading. Marsh told us, "We actually have a program for that." It was corrected? "Yes, that's correct."

The ratings reveal these 4 "below-average" nursing homes, based on federal and state health inspections:

-Ormsby Post Acute Rehab, Carson City

-Eastern Plumas Hospital, Portola

-Hearthstone of Northern Nevada, Baring Blvd, Sparks

-Manor Care Health Services, Plumas Street, Reno

At Manor Care Health, their corporate mobile administrator would not talk to us on camera at their 189-bed facility in Reno. Its last standard health inspection was July 31st. Altogether, inspectors found 15 health deficiencies there, double the national average.

Back at Rosewood, Rusty Marsh says you should use these new rankings only as a starting point. He says nothing replaces going to visit a nursing home yourself. "Come and visit. Ratings are important, but please get a tour, of all the places."
