Man Shot by Washoe County Deputy Arrested

Posted: Updated:

A man shot by a Washoe County sheriff's deputy near Gold Ranch Casino last weekend was arrested and now faces several gun-related charges.

Police say 27-year-old Michael Nelson Heil was contacted by the deputy for hitchhiking as well as looking like the description of a recent stolen vehicle suspect. After contact and a subsequent search for weapons, police say the deputy found what he thought was a firearm hidden inside Heil's clothing. They say when the deputy asked about it, Heil initially denied it, then later said it was a revolver. As the deputy tried to handcuff him, he then ran away.

Police say when a taser was used on Heil, he turned to the deputy and then tried to reach for his own gun at which time the deputy shot Heil.

Heil was taken into custody and transported to Renown Regional Medical Center for injuries sustained during the shooting.

Monday, he was released from the hospital, arrested and booked into the Washoe County Jail.

He's charged with resisting a public officer, soliciting a ride, being an ex-felon in possession of  a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

The deputy was not injured. Reno police are handling the investigation.

The deputy was placed on routine, paid administrative leave pending an investigation. Those findings will be forwarded to the district attorney's office to determine if the shooting was justified.
