New Storm Bears Down on Sandy-Battered NYC, NJ

A nor'easter is threatening New York and New Jersey with a repeat of the misery Superstorm Sandy brought last week.

Thousands of people in low-lying neighborhoods swamped last week are being warned to clear out. Officials say rain, wet snow and 60 mph wind gusts this evening could set back the cleanup from Sandy, toppling trees that were wrenched loose last week, and erasing some of the progress made in restoring electricity.

In New York, police went through vulnerable neighborhoods with loudspeakers, encouraging residents to leave. However, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has not ordered new evacuations. Many people are staying behind, some fearing looting and others who figuring whatever happens can't be any worse than what they've already gone through.

In New Jersey, public works crews have been building up dunes to protect the battered shoreline, and new shelters have been opened. Gov. Chris Christie says this storm is the last thing the state needs right now. He says he's "waiting for the locusts and pestilence next."  (AP)
