Red Cross Collects Donations in Reno for Sandy Victims

Posted: Updated:

The death toll from the Superstorm Sandy has risen to 94 and more than 3.5 million people are still without power.

We teamed up with the Red cross, Atlantis and Americom stations to help the victims. The Red Cross accepted donations all afternoon outside the Atlantis.

They raised more than $1,000. That money will help provide victims with everything including food, blankets and shelter.

"I had a woman that called today at the Red Cross and she said that instead of going to Vegas for her anniversary, she decided to donate the money to the Red Cross instead," says Karli Epstein with the Red Cross.

Folks stopped by all afternoon, donating cash and checks. We talked to a couple whose daughter endured Hurricane Katrina. They say they know how devastating these storms are.

"It just breaks my heart when I see what they're going through and how some of the people feel like their not getting enough relief," says Toni Clark, who lives in Fallon.

That drive may be over but you can still make a $10 donation with a simple text.

To help the American Red Cross, text "red cross" to 90999.

For the Salvation Army, text "storm" to 80888.

And for the American Humane Society, text "humane" to the same number.

You can also donate to the Red cross by calling 1-800-733-2767.

Mai Tai's Beauty Styling Salon located on Plumb Lane is also helping with the relief. During the entire month of November, they're offering free haircuts on Sundays to anyone who donates more than $8.
