It's the first weekend in November and the beginning of the holiday crafts fair and fundraiser season. In fact, you can find locally made crafts, homemade crafts, senior made crafts and more in town this weekend. Plus, you can indulge in everything chocolate while helping those with High Sierra Industries. Enjoy!

 

Friday 11/2

The Light Circus: Nevada Museum of Art

Celebrate a bygone era during this exhilarating presentation of vintage neon signs that once graced some of Nevada's most iconic restaurants, casinos, hotels, and business establishments. From flashing incandescent bulbs to candy-colored neon tubes, the nostalgic pieces featured in The Light Circus: Art of Nevada Neon Signs have not been seen publicly since they illuminated street side locales decades ago. Presented in the Museum's Feature Gallery.

The Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 PM, late on Thursdays until 8 PM. The galleries, Museum Store and Café Musée are closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and national holidays

Sustainability Film Festival ( Sierra Nevada College)

The inaugural Sustainability Film Festival is an innovative and exciting collaborative series of films designed to generate awareness, conversation, and debate around current issues in sustainability. Presented by the library's Sustainability Resource Center and Students Striving for Sustainability, this year's festival includes visionary documentaries that explore important issues of Social Justice, Food, Environment, Sustainability in Business, and a special afternoon of films appropriate for families and children ages 7-12. Film topics will be facilitated by local academics and community leaders who will lead discussions to present and exchange ideas on current and local trends in sustainability.

Carson Chamber Singers Presbyterian Church 7-9 PM

The Carson Chamber Singers, a choral group of the Carson City Symphony Association, begins its 28th season with concerts in Carson City on Nov. 2 and in Reno on Nov. 4. Director Michael Langham will conduct the Singers in works by René Clausen, Randall Thompson, Maurice Duruflé, and Louis Vierne. The Solemn Mass by Vierne, for chorus and organ, will be accompanied by Nancy Mielke.

The Carson City concert will be Friday, Nov. 2, 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 306 W. Musser St. Admission is free, requested donation $10 at the door.

Senior Sampler Holiday Crafts Fair for Assistance League of Reno-Sparks

More than 400 local Senior Citizens have created holiday crafts for the big event. It runs until 7 Friday night and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Assistance League Senior Sampler on Vassar Street in Reno.

Hoop House Production 9 am WNC

Hoop House Production extends the growing season and increases sales for many Northern Nevada farms. However, producers can face challenges with these greenhouse-style structures, which require growing methods different from planting directly into the soil.

Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute offers a Hoop House Production - Growing for Northern Nevada's Seasons workshop. The event will include classroom lecture and farm tours of hoop houses at Lattin Farms in Fallon and Custom Gardens Organic Farm in Silver Springs. Cost is $35 for those registering by Friday, Oct. 26, $45 afterward. Lunch is included. Seating is limited, and registration is required.

Featured speakers are all successful Nevada farmers: Ray Johnson of Custom Gardens Organic Farm, Silver Springs; Rick Lattin of Lattin Farms, Fallon; and Mark O'Farrell of Hungry Mother Organics, Minden.

The Grand Sierra Resort is the place for chocolate this weekend!

The Annual Fantasies in Chocolate event sponsored by the Reno Gazette Journal Foundation is set for Saturday evening. It's a formal affair that raises money that this year will to go the High Sierra Industries here which trains and employs more than 200 mentally and physically challenged citizens a year.

24th Annual Chocolate, Wine and Roses Festival

The 24th Annual Chocolate, Wine & Roses Festival is a fundraiser benefitting Tahoe SAFE Alliance and Project MANA. Reno Chamber Orchestra 8-10 Nightingale Hall UNR

Music Director Theodore Kuchar leads the RCO in Rossini's Overture to "L'Italiana in Algeri" and Haydn's Symphony No. 100, the "Military." Jana Bouskova, principal harpist with the Czech Philharmonic and professor at the Prague Conservatory, performs works by Ginastera and Debussy. Tickets are $20-$40 general and $5 youth and students.
