Hurricane Delays NTSB Hearing on Amtrak Fatals

Posted: Updated:

Hurricane Sandy has prompted the National Transportation Safety Board to postpone a meeting that was scheduled in Washington D.C. on Tuesday to determine the probable cause of a fatal crash between a truck and Amtrak train in Nevada.

Six people were killed and dozens injured when a semi-trailer truck slammed into the train at a rural crossing about 70 miles east of Reno on June 24, 2011.

The NTSB said in preliminary findings in September that video and audio from the lead locomotive show the crossing gates were down and the train horn and crossing bell were activated properly at the time of the crash, although several lawsuits filed against Amtrak claim otherwise.

The NTSB has not yet set a new date for the meeting. (AP)
