Food. Wine. And chocolate. All the essentials for a celebration. And while this is a party, it's not a typical one. Lives are potentially being saved on this night. Robin Krueger is with Northern Nevada Medical Center. "They have good intentions of doing it and they just don't get around to doing it. It's a great excuse to come together, great camaraderie, they hold each other accountable to do the important pre-screening."
Northern Nevada Medical Center is now hosting mammogram parties for groups, ranging from six to 12 women. The goal is to make the screening more fun and to get busy women, who might otherwise put it off, together at one time. Annie Rodewald attended the party. "I am having fun. Way better than the last time I came her and had one. This time it didn't hurt, maybe it was the glass of wine I had before I went."
Plus, newer technology. At the Diagnostic Breast Care Center they have several improvements that make a mammogram more comfortable. Linda McDaniel is the supervisor. "One of the differences is this paddle as where all the other paddles come down, this paddle comes down and then it flexes away from the chest wall so that it's not as obnoxious. Plus, we offer mammopads. It's memory foam which makes the screening warmer and we're able to compress more breast tissue with less discomfort."
And these parties, which Northern Nevada Medical Center throws for free, creates a support group for women who are anxious about getting a mammogram. "If you're going to get your boobs squished then it might as well be fun," says Kimberlee Simantel who attended the party.
And a commemorative picture to seal the deal that this is a party even if a mammogram was at the heart of it.
