Services have been set for former South Dakota Sen. George McGovern.

A prayer service will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the church.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Mary Sommervold Hall at the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science in Sioux Falls.

A private burial will take place at a later date at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

McGovern, who lost a 1972 presidential bid to Richard M. Nixon, died Sunday at a Sioux Falls hospice. He was 90.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid released this statement on Sunday.

"My relationship with Senator George McGovern goes back decades to my time as Lieutenant Governor, when I worked to help his campaign in Nevada. Throughout his historic career, Senator McGovern was a great patriot. He flew bombing missions during World War II and worked tirelessly for social justice upon his return, advocating passionately on behalf of the most vulnerable among us. As the Democratic nominee for president, Senator McGovern put principle over politics and stood up for what he believed in. He lived his values, dedicating his life to fighting the scourge of poverty here at home and around the world.

"The forces of social justice lost a great fighter today, and Senator McGovern will be sorely missed."
