Monday Morning Storm Watch Update

As a powerful winter storm rolls into our region a few schools are on delays and one is closed.

The Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District will be closed Monday, October 22nd, 2012.

Whittell High School and Zephyr Cove Elementary School will be on a one hour delay Monday Morning.

Chains or 4-Wheel drive are required from Interstate 80 at Nyack to Donner pass. Chains or 4-Wheel drive are also required on Mt. Rose Highway. 

*WINTER STORM WARNING* in effect for the Sierra, including Lake Tahoe, until 11 AM Tuesday

*WIND ADVISORY* in effect for western Nevada, including Reno-Sparks, Carson City, and Douglas County, until 5pm.

Our first blast of winter continues today with strong winds, heavy mountain snow, and scattered showers in the valley throughout the day and evening. The Sierra will see at least 18" of snow, while Lake Tahoe could pick up 4-7" by Tuesday morning.

Expect chain controls to be in effect along all mountain passes through Tuesday.

Highs will be much colder today, in the 40s and low 50s most areas. Winds will continue to gust in the 30-40mph range all day long.

Snow levels drop tonight down to the valley floors which could see a dusting of snow by Tuesday morning and 1-2" in the foothills.

By Tuesday afternoon the storm begins to move out of the area with a clearing trend beginning Wednesday and lasting into the weekend. Highs bottom out on Tuesday with 48 for the high and warm up slowly into the low 60s by the weekend with sunshine returning.
