BBB Secure Your ID Day Today

Posted: Updated:

Better Business Bureau (BBB) invites consumers and businesses to take part in BBB Secure Your ID Day on today at the AT&T parking lot (corner of Plumb and Yori; 645 E Plumb Lane) from 9am-12pm.

The event provides free shredding and recycling services to take steps toward identity theft prevention and a greener planet.

"The most critical tool we have to fight identity theft is awareness," said Tim Johnston, president and CEO of BBB serving Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Last year, 11.6 million Americans became victims of identity fraud, resulting in the loss of $18 billion, according to a report from Javelin Strategy and Research.

"Properly destroying documents that carry information you don't want getting into the hands of crooks is an important first step to fighting identity theft," added Johnston.

Bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to shred, and take home the tips and resources you need to help protect yourself. Documents to be shredded should be removed from binders, but staples, paper clips, CDs and floppy discs are okay to shred.
