Campaign Volunteers Knock on Doors

Posted: Updated:

With just 23 days until election day, volunteers are putting in a lot of time and effort here in northern Nevada.

Volunteers on both sides of the ticket were busy making phone calls and knocking on doors all weekend long.

California hasn't voted Republican in a presidential election since 1988. The Golden State may not be a swing state, but Nevada certainly is. Which is why many Romney supporters from California, are coming here.

"The Romney campaign is putting them up here in Reno because it's one of the most important parts of the country," says Aaron McLear with the Romney campaign.

Saturday, volunteers with Romney campaign went door to door in Reno neighborhoods, talking with potential voters and handing out literature.

"We're making sure that anybody from California who wants to help can come every single weekend, to the phone banking and to the door knocking," says McLear.

The Republicans are out and about, and so are the Democrats.

"There's a small army of volunteers out in the neighborhoods all throughout Washoe County," says Pam duPre with the Democratic Party of Washoe County.

Sunday, those volunteers with the Obama campaign were also knocking on doors. They say it's a lot of work, but speaking face-to-face with voters is a vital part of the campaign.

"It's not easy to phone bank and do this, it's not," says Melinda Fisher. "I don't like it, but it has to be done."

Both campaigns say they have hundreds of volunteers in from California to help out, showing just how important Nevada's six electoral votes are in this election.

"They know Nevada is a swing state," says duPre. "We're one of just a handful of swing states. Washoe County is a swing county in the swing state."
