A Sparks man is behind bars after police say he beat and stabbed his wife.

Police say the suspect and the victim had been planning to divorce and they got in a fight over property and child custody. This happened at a trailer home on El Rancho Drive just before noon Saturday.

Police say the man attacked the victim, and the couple's teenage daughter tried to stop him. A neighbor also helped stop the attack and kept the man from leaving before police arrived.

"If not only the girl had not intervened but the neighbor, this lady's injuries would have been most likely far more serious than they are," says Pete Krall, a lieutenant with the Sparks Police Department.

Police arrested the suspect. His name is Jose Rios-Gomez. He admitted to police that he had been planning to kill his wife. As for the victim, she was treated for her injuries at the hospital then released.
