Posted: Updated:

Reno Mayor Bob Cashell family spokesman Greg Ferraro provided the following statement:

"Reno Mayor Bob Cashell underwent planned open heart surgery yesterday afternoon at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno where he is resting comfortably today. The procedure to replace a heart valve is a common and routine surgery and Mayor Cashell's doctors expect him to make a full and complete recovery.

"Mayor Cashell will be recuperating at the hospital for several days and later at home for four to six weeks. The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses and support staff at Saint Mary's for their excellent care and professionalism."

Ferraro told us today, "he's up today, up and been joking and laughing and doctor's are surprised he's doing so well. So we're very pleased to know that the procedure went well."

Cashell is a former Nevada lieutenant governor and university regent.

The 74-year-old was elected mayor in 2002 and re-elected in 2006 and 2010.

His current term expires in 2014.

For the time being -- city councilman Dave Aiazzi is serving as vice mayor.
