Sparks Firefighters: No Substance Found at Post Office

Posted: Updated:

A report of a suspicious substance led to the evacuation of a U.S. Post Office in Sparks.

The Sparks Fire Department says a woman had her three children with her when she picked up her mail at the post office near Vista and Baring Boulevards around 4pm Tuesday afternoon. They got back into their car and when the woman opened up an envelope, she says some sort of powder fell out.

She called 911 and firefighters, police and the health department showed up. The woman and her three kids were then decontaminated.

"They didn't have any symptoms at all that they know of, we checked 'em out and they didn't have any symptoms from what we checked out as well," says Bob King, Fire Marshal with the Sparks Fire Department.

After the post office was evacuated, they cordoned off the area as a precaution. HazMat specialists then performed thorough tests.

"It takes some time to do this, it's not something that we rush, we take our time with this and make sure we do a full examination of the entire scene," King explains.

Officials say all tests came back negative and no substance was found. The U.S. Post Office is back open.
