Ramps Near Moana Lane Close for Interchange Construction

Posted: Updated:

The asphalt on three of four ramps is being torn up at Moana Lane and Interstate 580 to be replaced with longer lasting concrete.

It's all part of the installation of the Diverging Diamond Interchange or DDI.

Drivers will cross into the left lanes, giving them a free left turn to get onto the freeway.

The Nevada Department of Transportation worked with Granite Construction in the planning stage of the project, trimming $1.5 million just in construction costs.

"It's been a great partnership with Granite," Project Manager Adam Searcy said. "Now, moving into construction, they're able to execute the plan that we developed to a T."

By installing retaining walls under the bridge, Moana Lane gains about 20 feet of width.

"That way, we can move the DDI underneath the bridge without having to modify the structure, itself, or impeding mainline," Searcy said.

Adding length to the overpass would have meant the $6.9 million project would have ballooned up to about $25-30 million.

The DDI project also coincides with the Moana Widening Project.

"With the widening of Moana Lane, by the RTC, this interchange would be a bottleneck if we didn't complete our improvements," Searcy said. "So, fortunately, we've been working well together, both in design and construction."

The I-580 southbound offramp is the only ramp that is open for traffic.

It had been closed during phase one of the project.

"That's the heart of volume movement on this interchange and we were able to close it for four weeks, completely reconstruct it, and now, have it open again," Searcy said.

Cars will only be able to drive west on Moana Lane from the freeway, but there is access for pedestrians to go underneath the bridge through the end of construction.

There is also business access on both sides of the street.

This is also Nevada's first project that will include green-colored bike lanes, which is expected to make the area safer.

Construction is expected to be finished by November 21st.
