Social Security benefits will increase next year, but not by much.

The American Institute for Economic Research estimates recipients can expect a bump of 1.5% - 1.7% in their benefits. That's less than half of the 3.6% cost of living increase recipients received earlier this year when inflation was higher.

The Labor Department will release its September inflation reading next week.

It's the final of 12 readings used to calculate the cost of living adjustment made annually to benefits. The Social Security Administration will announce the 2013 benefit increase at that time.
