CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- There's a new intensity to the rivalry between the Nevada Wolf Pack and the UNLV Rebels that extends beyond athletic prowess.

To win the Governor's Cup, academics will also be in play.

Gov. Brian Sandoval, university officials and others announced the new Governor's Series competition on Monday during a news conference in Carson City.

Co-sponsored by NV Energy and Barrick Gold Corp., the cup will be awarded at the end of the school year to the university that earns the most points in 15 sporting events. Points will also be awarded for student performance in the classroom.

In the event of a tie, the victor of the annual battle for the Fremont Cannon will determine the winner.

That fall football ritual unfolds Saturday when UNLV hosts Nevada.
