Posted: Updated:

The 14th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure happens this Sunday at the Grand Sierra Resort which has turned pink in honor of breast cancer awareness.

The day's festivities kick off at 7 a.m. with a tailgate party for the numerous teams that raised $625 or more. There will be a celebration to honor survivors from 8:30 a.m. to 8:55 a.m. with the race kicking off at 9:00 a.m.

Channel 2 News Anchor Wendy Damonte will preside as this year's honorary chair.

The Northern Nevada affiliate of the Susan G. Komen organization began in 1998 with the mission to educate Nevadans about breast cancer and develop screening and treatment programs. Since its inception, the Northern Nevada affiliate has raised and invested more than $3.2 million for local breast cancer programs and $770,000 for research. Seventy-five percent of net proceeds are granted to lifesaving local breast cancer programs while 25% of the funds contribute to innovative research toward a cure.

More than 4,000 people came out to show their support with a 5k walk and run last year at Boomtown.
