Martin, Smith Compete for State Senate District #13

Posted: Updated:

State Senate District 13 used to be State Senate District 1 and it's been held by a Democrat since 1995. That seat is open because Sheila Leslie moved districts and her fellow Democrat Debbie Smith is hoping to fill it.

After 10 years in the Assembly Debbie Smith is hoping to make her move to the State Senate. She says gridlock does happen in Carson City but that it's more the exception than the rule.

"You hear a lot about the things we get stuck on," she says,"But we actually work pretty well together. And a lot of what we do is bipartisan.

She says there is consensus that the basic tax structure needs to be examined.

"We have cut out state budget four out of the last five years. At some point we are going to have to talk about not just staying where we are and not cutting further, but what are we going to do about repairing the cuts we've made?"

Kathy Martin is the Republican in the race. She and her husband have run J & S security doors in Reno for 27 years. She wants to be the voice for small business.

"It seems that every time we turn around," she says, "It's another tax or another regulation. There's always something they want us to pay for. I don't mind paying my fair share," she says. "But I don't want to pay other people's shares too."

Martin has made one run for the Assembly. She says she feels businesses need her in Carson City.
