South Lake Tahoe Police are investigating an apartment fire allegedly caused by a drug lab explosion Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities responded to a report of a structure fire at the Forest Manor apartment complex on Forest Avenue around 3:15 p.m.

As firefighters began to extinguish flames from the downstairs unit, the complex was evacuated. Crews found 23-year old Barek Madden in the unit, where the fire started, with third degree burns to his face, arms and upper body. He was flown by helicopter to the UC-Davis Medical Center burn unit.

His friend, 22-year old Schuyler VanFleet, was uninjured, but received singed hair, eyebrows and beard. No one else in the complex was injured.

Police later questioned VanFleet, who told them he was visiting Madden. He reportedly admitted he used several cans of butane fuel to cook marijuana into a concentrated form, called "Hashish," and that soon caused the fire.

VanFleet was arrested for unlawfully causing a fire and operating a drug lab.

Criminal charges may also be pending for Madden.
