Free Flu, Tdap Immunizations at School-Located Clinics

Posted: Updated:

Immunize Nevada, Washoe County Health District and Washoe County School District are partnering to provide students with free flu and Tdap vaccinations this fall beginning Tuesday, October 9. Clinics will be held primarily in elementary schools and middle schools with 6th grade students. The clinics are scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis on Tuesdays and Thursdays through December. Funding for these school based clinics is made possible by the Nevada State Immunization Program (NSIP) through a grant from the Nevada State Health Division and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"We know how busy families are and hope that offering free immunizations to elementary students at school takes one thing off many parents' to-do lists this fall," said Heidi Parker, Executive Director of Immunize Nevada. "Getting an annual flu vaccination is the best way to stop the spread of seasonal influenza and to keep kids in school. This is also an opportunity for sixth graders to get a Tdap shot before they enter 7th grade next fall at no cost."

Last year during the 2011-2012 school year, over 8,800 flu vaccinations and 2,800 Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) shots were administered through this project. The goal for the 2012-2013 clinic is to vaccinate a minimum of 10,000 kids, or one in three elementary school children in Washoe County.

"Now is the time to get vaccinated," added Tina Vesely, RN and Clinical Services Manager for Immunize Nevada. "Yearly flu vaccination should begin in early fall, or as soon as vaccine is available and continue throughout the flu season which can last as late as May. We never know the timing, severity or duration of the flu season, so being proactive early makes a difference for keeping children healthy, in school and learning."

Thanks to the NSIP, this free immunization clinic opportunity is available to all interested Washoe County School District elementary schools and middle schools with 6th grade students. Immunize Nevada is currently finalizing the 2012-2013 clinic schedule; please contact your child's school directly to find out if your student will have access to this program.
