First Lady Michelle Obama Speaks in Reno

Posted: Updated:

First Lady Michelle Obama spoke at the University of Nevada Thursday morning.

The first lady told a crowd of more than 3,000 at the quad on the UNR campus Wednesday that this election is sure to be closer than the one President Barack Obama won four years ago.

She talked about the fact that her husband has lived the American Dream and is anxious to help others realize it.

"We learned long ago that truth matters, that you can't take shortcuts, that we have a community lifting us up and with out blessings we should give back to those who have less," she said.

And she outlined the progress her husband has made since taking office. First she described the economy as he took office and then spoke of the jobs that have been created since, the reforms to healthcare he has ushered in, and keeping interest rates on student loans down. Then she turned the focus on Nevada.

"In 2010," she said. "We won Nevada by 121,000 votes, which may sound like a lot but it was close. That breaks down to 69 votes a precinct," she said. "And you be the difference to swing a precinct by calling your friends and neighbors to get out and vote."

And she wound up her remarks by saying no one could've turned the mess our economy was in around in four years and Barack Obama needs more time to see his plan work.

The crowd was energetic and supportive.

"I think it as awesome," Connie Dillon of Reno said. "She really pumped the crowd and we need to not forget what she said..not be cocky....and push hard 'til the end!"

"I liked it a lot," said UNR student Stephanie Jimenez.

It was her first visit to Northern Nevada since taking part in the Women's Summit in June of 2010. The visit also comes almost 4 years to the day when the President spoke at the quad.

Her speech also takes place on the first day of the presidential debates. You can watch the first debate live starting at 6pm on Channel 2.

Then next Thursday, we'll air the vice presidential debate also at 6pm.

The Nevada U.S. Senate debate will air afterwards at 8pm. You can submit questions for the Sen. Dean Heller-Rep. Shelley Berkley debate at debates@ktvn.com – by Sunday night.

Meanwhile, President Obama has left Nevada after several days preparing for a debate with Republican contender Mitt Romney.

Obama's plane left McCarran International Airport about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday. The debate is set for Wednesday evening in Colorado.

Obama arrived in Las Vegas on Sunday to deliver a speech to more than 11,000 people at Desert Pines High School. The event opened with a show by Mexican rock band Manß.

He hid away in the Lake Las Vegas community to practice for the debate for most of the past three days, but emerged Monday to deliver pizzas to campaign workers in Henderson.

On Tuesday, he took his first trip ever to the Hoover Dam. He called that "spectacular." (AP)
