Washoe Schools Celebrate International Walk to School Day

Eighteen schools in Washoe County will welcome fall by participating in International Walk To School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Students and their families, along with teachers and community leaders, will be joining schools from around the nation and the world to celebrate walking and "rolling" to school.

"Walk to School Day is an internationally recognized day to celebrate the benefits of active transportation by encouraging school children to walk and bike to school," said Washoe County School Police Officer MJ Cloud, coordinator of Safe Routes to School. "Washoe County, Reno, and Sparks join RTC, Washoe County Health District Air Quality Management Division, and local bike and pedestrian activists by urging schools to take part in ‘Walk or Roll to School Day'."

"We are joining with other community leaders and organizations to promote this one-day event because we want to encourage a successful year ahead of safe walking and biking to school," said WCSD Police Chief Mike Mieras.

Pedestrian, bicycle, and traffic injuries can be a threat to Washoe County's school-age children. "Walk to School" activities provide opportunities for communities to address safety concerns around schools. Reducing the risk of injury includes teaching children age-appropriate walking and bicycle skills, reminding drivers to be extra vigilant in watching for young walkers and bicyclists, and identifying and eliminating hazardous conditions along routes to school. "Walk to School" activities can also help children reach the minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week as recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General.

Mieras, Cloud, WCSD Superintendent Pedro Martinez, Washoe County District Health Officer Dr. Joseph Iser, Safe Kids Coordinator Melissa Krall, and Nevada State Safe Routes to School Coordinator Tim Rowe will take part in this year's celebration.
