Sprinkle, Lightfoot Compete for State Assembly District #30

Posted: Updated:

The two men running for Assembly District 30  have different approaches to the job...but a commonality in their backgrounds. They have both spent their working years in public service.

Mike Sprinkle has been a firefighter for 14 years and a paramedic for 20.

"To me this is an extension of what I've always done, public service," Sprinkle says.

He has spent time in Carson City testifying on legislation. He wants to see the schools rebuilt and he says he has a way of getting people to work together that would be helpful in Carson City.

"In the end, after the election, we are all legislators and that the mentality what's been lost in the mission down in Carson City," he says. "I want to be the person to get them to open their ears and talk and not fight so much."

Ken Lightfoot is his opponent. Lightfoot spend 33 years working in the Sparks Police Department and is currently the Chairman of the Board for Secret Witness. He now works security for Scolari's Markets. He agrees that things need to change in Carson City.

"The idea is not to do what the parties want there, it's to get things fixed!"

Lightfoot agrees schools are in bad shape but says a margin tax proposed here isn't the answer. That tax would focus on businesses with revenues over $1 million a year and the money would be earmarked for education. But Lightfoot says it would be a disaster for business.

"I will tell you this. The margin tax proposed would be catastrophic for business...especially retail. Like in our business, groceries, the margin is razor thin and taxing businesses like this would put a lot of businesses out of business altogether," he says.

He does say he's open to ideas that would solve the problems though.
