Benitez-Thompson, Taber Compete for Assembly District #27

Posted: Updated:

Assembly District #27 has seen huge changes because of redistricting. Therefore the woman who's held that seat for the past session is spending a lot of time getting to know her new constituents.

Teresa Benitez-Thompson prides herself in knowing the people she's representing. And she has had a lot of new areas to walk this campaign season.

"The North Valleys are new for me and they have their own concerns like maintaining a rural lifestyle up there. They are concerned about education like everyone is," she says.

And while taxes are a tough thing to talk about in Carson City, she says it's a conversation that has to happen.

"We need to have a conversation about what's fair. We need to talk about where we are and what our goals are and about the gap and and equitable way to get us there," she says.

Tom Taber is a retired United Airlines captain who is most concerned about representation for the people.

"We need to have people start representing the people of Nevada instead of just having politicians there telling us what to do," he says.

And he says the real problem with education is that even when kids graduate, they aren't really prepared for the real working world. Taber says we need to be realistic that not everyone needs to go to college and that technical and vocational training are needed.

He also would like to see government's role overall...re-evaluated.

"We should look at everything," he says. "I know we don't have enough money for everyone to have everything they want, but we should look at what we are asking government to do and have it do what we need done collectively and maybe we should take more responsibility for what we need to do individually."

Taber has served on citizen advisory boards and commissions and as a citizen lobbyist. Benitez-Thompson has served one term in the Assembly, is a hospice social worker and in a full disclosure is married to KTVN weekend Meteorologist Jeff Thompson.
