Just 4 Days Left in 'Run for Tuna' Food Drive

Posted: Updated:

The clock is ticking for De De Rosene, a local woman who is on a tuna-related mission.

Rosene has been collecting donated cans of tuna for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada all month, but with just four days to go, she's asking for the community's help.

Rosene partnered with Americom Radio for a tuna drive Wednesday. Anyone who brings a can of tuna to the studio will be entered to win backstage passes to a Train concert.

On top of that, donors will be helping thousands of Northern Nevadans in need.

"People are hungry in Nevada and in Reno and Sparks," Rosene said, "and this is just a way for everyone to help. It doesn't take that much, a can of tuna isn't that much."

This is the second year Rosene has put on the 'Run for Tuna' food drive, and this year the goal is even bigger. So far she has 2,500 cans stacked in her dining room. Her goal is 7,500 cans, which is 2,000 more than the 5,500 she collected last year.

Rosene volunteers with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, and said she wanted to help them collect the types of food that they really need. Canned tuna is non-perishable, healthy, and a good source of protein.

"It's a food item that they are looking for," Rosene said, "because it's high in protein, and it lasts on the shelf a long time."

To donate, bring the canned tuna to the Alice 96.5 and Sunny 106.9 studios on Matley Lane Wednesday between 6am and 6pm. Each can of tuna will earn an entry to win backstage passes to the Train concert on Thursday at the Reno Events Center.
