Vietnam Vets Traveling Memorial Wall in Carson City
The Vietnam Vets Traveling Memorial Wall tribute will visit Mills Park in Carson City October 25-28 for the inaugural celebration of "Battle Born Days." All local area Vietnam and Vietnam era Veterans are encouraged to participate in the procession bringing the Wall into town and sign up to serve on the honor guard protecting the Wall while it is in Carson City.
The mobile memorial is a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. It travels across the United States serving as a tribute fallen soldiers.
"We want to make this a ‘coming home' celebration for Vietnam Vets," said Rick Arnold, who heads the Vietnam Veterans of America, Carson Area Chapter 388. "Many of us never experienced a ‘welcome home' from the Vietnam War and we believe it is now time to honor, respect and remember our brothers and sisters who served."
In addition to the Memorial Wall, the "Vietnam Area" of the park will have a static display of Vietnam era equipment and two large tents with Vietnam memorabilia. There will also be a "Welcome Home" barbecue from 1-3PM on Saturday, Oct 27th.
"The Wall escort itself will be pretty spectacular. We expect at minimum of 500 motorcycles in the caravan. This is a controlled ride so prospective riders need to sign up at the battle born website www.battleborndays.com Spectators will be able to line up along the route once we are south of Reno on 395. We'd certainly like to see a great turn-out from Northern Nevada."
The procession begins on October 24 at around noon on Hwy 80 outside of Fallon. The route will follow Hwy 80 into Reno, turning south on 580 and exit onto Hwy 395 at south Virginia Street. The procession will follow Hwy 395 through Pleasant Valley and Washoe Valley, into Carson City. They will exit at Hwy 50 west and proceed to Mills Park. Expected time of arrival is 3PM.
The Traveling Wall will be a part of ‘Battle Born Days,' which will be unique military display to be held in conjunction with the Nevada Day celebration. This year's theme is "Honoring Our Military & Families - Past, Present, and Future." Veterans are also encouraged to join the Nevada Day parade on Saturday, October 27th at 10 AM. Accommodations will be made for those who are not ambulatory.
